Carleene, you can export your data to PAF 4. Do this by clicking FILE|EXPORT and on the screen that opens (EXPORT) tick the button in front of "PAF 4". Then select the records that you wish to have included (on the right). On this screen you can also select to export "ALL" or "PARTIAL" (records. If you select "PARTIAL" you will then need to "select" the records you wish to export. You will find all these steps in eHELP or in the USERS GUIDE (under HELP).
PAF 5 backups your records in a "zip" file. You don't need to have any particular "zip" program installed to handle this file. PAF 5, when asked (FILE|RESTORE) will handle the "unzipping" for you. You can of course, send a PAF 5 backup file (zipped) to someone who is using PAF 5. They can then "restore" it to a similar named folder on their computer. In the case of your friend with PAF 4, of course, you will have to create a GEDCOM (as above). When you have created it, and remembered where you have "saved" it on your hard drive, you can attach it to an e-mail and send it to her.
The advantage of having PAF 5 use "zip" files for backups, means that the backup files occupy far less space than the methods used in earlier versions. This is of particular importance to people who have extremely large data bases, or conversely have limited hard drive space.
Another simpler solution would be to have your friend upgrade to PAF 5 :-).
