54 year old female seeks understanding and very patient PAF help... I am inexplicably intimidated by computers although I have been working ON them since 1979, live in a teeny Texas country town with no one here who can teach/help me learn, and my 26 years of family research documentation is at risk of being LOST to me forever because of my fear and ignorance of the technical side of this mega monster. I have been wrestling with a devastating problem since I downloaded 22.214.171.124 and Disaster has struck!!!It's a long story but due tomy own ignorance, I have lost ALL of my notes on my 20,000+ kinfolk in my 11 different PAF programs making my information totally worthless now.......unless these notes are "hidden" in the program somewhere?? I am praying that someone will help me? FYI: I am using Windows98 SE and this particular PAF file says it is PAF 5.0 so I guess I successfully deleted PAF 126.96.36.199 because it doesn't show up when I search under Start>Find>paf ??? The information below is from 1 of 11 of my different PAF files located at: C:MyDocumentsPaf 512NUNNELEE.pafand there is also C:MyDocumentsPaf 512NUNNELEE.zip When I open this file, the "Title Bar" reads: C:MYDOCU~1PAF512~1NUNNELEE.PAF (as a complete computer greenhorn, is this pertinent? what do the " ~ " mean?) This is what I have found to date re my missing PAF notes: Below is just 1 of 10 of my PAF ancestry files...can anybody explain what these items and record numbers mean??? I am particularly interested in the "Notes: 505 records" C:My Docu~1PAF512~NUNNELEE.PAF File Properties: Size: 757760 Modified: 01/30/2003 Individuals = 783 records and Deleted records = 0 Marriages = 290 recordsand Deleted records = 0 Sources = 40 records Citations = 687 Repositories = 0 NOTES = 505 Events = 908 Multimedia Items = 0 Free disk space = 4830 mb ALSO: (1) Tools>Preferences>General>Display Notes Sector> while browsing (this is what I have checked now) (2) using Home Person in Family View, clicking on edit notes icon I get a new window titled "Select Notes". Within this window there is a "box" and in it are the TAGS I know were on this Individual's note screen, i.e., so just maybe this means these notes are just HIDDEN somewhere...? VERIFY: BIOGRAPHY: DEATH: BURIAL: MARRIAGE: MILITARY: (3) for this window there are "buttons" for just 5 options: Open Close Help Add (the A is underlined...does it do something?) Defaults (the D is underlined...does it do something?) (3a) there are2 more "buttons" but these are HIDDEN Modify (the M is underlined...does it do something?) Remove (the R is underlined...does it do something?)
NOW, if and when my missing notes are recovered, I would like to MOVE my PAF 5.0 program files to the C: drive where it should have been located in the first place (I thought "save the PROGRAM to disk" meant "save to a floppy" so I put it in MyDocuments.....) duhhhh. AND, I want to run my different PAF ancestry files from that location too...is that possible? FYI: these are the 11 different PAF files I use/created (was making different ones a bad idea? is that part of my problem?) - NONE of them show the notes for any individual. I know this is a LOT to ask but if I weren't so desparate and had someone locally I could turn to I would - but I have no one since my beloved cousin Harold died last May. Blessings, Kathye
