After doing some reading on the AWT forum I was surprised to learn that PAF and AWT share a common ancestor, Ancestral Quest. So maybe the PAF error message does mean something relating to PAF. Apparently AQ can read AFT databases as well as reading PAF databases.
Q: Is Ancestry Family Tree compatible with PAF 5.0? Ancestry Family Tree is not directly compatible with PAF 5.0. Additionally, GEDCOM files created using PAF 5.0 may not be compatible if the file was created using the UTF-8 character set. GEDCOM files that include the UTF-8 characters will not import directly into Ancestry Family Tree. To create a GEDCOM file that will import successfully to Ancestry Family Tree, you will need to select to export your GEDCOM from PAF 5.0 using the Ansel character set.
Given that information from Ancestry.com, it seems like a long shot, but if you want to email your data file to me, I can try opening it in PAF5. IF successful, I could send you a gedcom back, that you could import into PAF or any other genealogy database software you would like. No guarantees of success, but it is worth a try.
