I received an email from someone asking how they could move Ancestry Family Tree data files to PAF. The AFT software had been removed from the computer and only the AFT data files remained, representing many years of research. AFT was discontinued when Ancestry.com bought Family Tree Maker from Borland, and has not been available for many years.
I found a solution. Like PAF, AFT was based on an early version of AncestralQuest written by Gaylon Findlay.
On my old computer I didn't find the AFT software, but I did find an AFT data file. I double-clicked it and it gave me a choice of software to try including PAF, Legacy and Ancestral Quest. I remembered that PAF wouldn't do it, so I chose AQ. It converted the file to a .AQ file and it looks good. Legacy might have worked too.
You can use AQ free for 6 weeks before purchasing it. That will be more than enough time to export the data to gedcom files for use in PAF or other software.
If you hear of anyone with this problem, suggest that they try opening the AFT files in AQ. I can offer no guarantees, but it worked for me.
