So long as you backup to a CDR or a DVD+/DVD- instead of a DVD-RW, you should be backup or restore from either DVD drive.
When backing up, I suggest that you include the date in the file name. That way you can restore any particular backup without it replacing your current data (It will just create an additional PAF data file which you can examine and delete without it affecting your current data.) As my brother might say "Half the fun of having a backup is knowing that it actually worked!"
