You need to know what field the data is in that you want to search for. To search for a surname: 1-Click "Define" Field filter on the "Find Individual" screen. Make sure the "Advanced" button is selected (Left pointing chevrons). 2- Dbl-click on "Name" in left column (possible fields). 3-Select the part of the name to search for (surname only). 4-Select type of search (matches). 5- Type the surname in the Text box. 6- Click OK. This adds 1 line in the Rt column (Current filter). 7- Click OK to run the search. 8- Click "Show results only" under filtered list to only see the people that were selected by the search.
You can use "and, or, not" in the "Current filter" column on the "Field Filtering" screen to combine searches of multiple fields. To make sure I don't type the search value wrong in the text box, I will find the value on someone's "Edit Individual" screen, use "Edit-Copy" then "paste" the value in the text box. I usually find it best to write out the search's logic on paper before I type it in PAF.
