I have looked and simply cannot find where I got the quote about James McCool being killed by Indians...he's not in my line.....I descend through Ann McCool and her husband Thomas Pugh, and their daughter, Rachel.During the 1760s the family moved to theBush River mm, in Newberry Co, SC.Many of the HOpewell friends fled the Indian attacks that were taking place in the Shenandoah Valley. The Hopewell minutes includes a list of those who had been driven from their homes, and many who needed help from the Philadelphia meeting. Thomas Pugh was included in the list, along with his wife and 7 children. My ancestor, a daughter named Rachel, was born while they were in SC, and before they moved back to Frederick Co and the Hopewell meeting.James Wright, Jr, was also included in the listing, along with Sr and his wife, Mary. The Friends followed Penn's lead and tried to be fair with their dealings with the local Indians, but there was a problem with knowing just what Indians to pay, for what lands. There was even a Quaker Committee onIndian Affairs that tried to arbitrate a fair settlement with the Indians, but this dragged on into the 1800s, not because of maltreatment by the Quakers but the difficulty in knowing what Indians were entitled to payment for what lands! If interested in this area, the HOPEWELL FRIENDS HISTORY 1724-1934, has a lot of great info.
