That does seem to be your Charles on the WWI draft card, so we know he was alive, but I couldn't find him in the 1910 census anywhere. Possibly David died and Catherine remarried, with him enumerated with the step-father's surname? I think they may have left New York. I searched on italiangen and found plenty of Chattertons, Chaddertons, etc., but no David or Catherine who fit. It might be helpful to get an obit or probate records for this Jacob Chatterton.

If this is David's father then you'd have some idea if he and Charles were still alive then.
Have you checked out the David Chatterton who was an electrician in Hopewell, NJ? He was advertising in a Hopewell newspaper after this David disappears from NY so maybe that's him.
