Here are some of my Southern Unionists who were from Tennessee:
David "Tinker Dave" Beaty - a native of Fentress County, TN who served as the leader of a guerrila unit called "Beaty's Independent Scouts."These "bushwhackers" fought locally to prevent a Confederate advance. His greatest rival was Champ Ferguson, who was a Confederate guerrila.
Andrew Jackson Stephens - one member of Beaty's Independent Scouts who was killed when making a run into Kentucky to get bread and other food.
William Carol Tipton - another member of Beaty's Independent Scouts.
Elijah Watters - a native of Wayne County, KY, then Fentress County, TN, who fought with the 1st Kentucky Cavalry. The story is that the Beasons, whom he lived with because he was orphaned at a young age, were going to sign him up with the Confederate army the next time they were in the area. Elijah ran away to Camp Dick Robinson, where they first refused him because he was too young. After explaining that he was an orphan, the captain said Elijah could stay with him until he was old enough to enlist.
Tilman Giles - a native of Monroe County, TN who originally signed with the Confederacy, then deserted and joined the 3rd Tennessee Mounted Infantry under the name Robert Powell. It seems that Mr. Powell paid Tilman to take his place, and nobody found out until the real Robert Powell tried to claim his pension.A trial was held, and Robert confessed that Tilman did indeed serve in his place.
I'm very happy to share more information on any of my ancestors.
