Hey, it feels good to know I am not alone. I am a Northern Alabamian with Marion Co roots, married to a south Georgian who's response to my announcemnt that my gg grandpa fought for the north elicited the following comment: "Well, I sure wouldnt tell anybody".
What I read in another post is certainly true, elevation did seem to be a factor. Mountain people (and I am one) have a tendency to hold fast to what they believe, and that is what some did....they believed in the UNITED states of America. I also have slaveholders in my tree, surely they favored the CSA. In fact, I am searching for one (Ensley Duke) that I am sure died middle to late in the war. Just a brickwall thus far. In my maternal tree, I seem to have a brother who fought against brother, one dying for the Union, one surviving serving the CSA.
