Hello to the Southern Unionists!Am I glad to find this forum. A nice 4th of July gift! I just returned from a trip to TN and NC, trying to find more about the North Carolina Mounted Infantry, with absolutely no luck. I expected to find my greatgrandfather on that famous 1890 Veterans Census. He had applied for Veteran's disability benefit by 1884, and was approved before 1890.Later his widow, Louisa Eliza LEDWELL CHAVIS, received widow's benefits. How can I find this family on that 1890 Census?
My greatgrandfather, Josiah CHAVIS, b. 1838 in Randolph Co., North Carolina, joined the Union army in Knoxville, TN.His brother, Robert CHAVIS, b. 1840 did also.Friend and cousin of Josiah's future wife, Eli T. LEDWELL, also joined the 3rd Regiment, North Carolina Mounted Infantry.
Josiah was a private, [ CaptainW. P. Hargrave, 91 Ind. (?) V ].He enlisted in the Union Army for 3 years. He was present at Company Muster Rolls Sept. and Oct. 1864; Oct. - Feb. 1865;March and April 1865; on April 20 1865Josiah was absent with prisoner guard in Knoxville, Tennessee per order of General Tilson. On 8 August 1865 he was mustered out in Knoxville, TN, with his last pay of $100 received 31 October 1864.Clothing account of $13.65 noted; still due him: $100. "Private from date of enlistment, Present for duty, discharge furnished."Signed byX (his mark).
Josiah, called Joseph after the war, was disabled in the war and had a huge file at the National Archives.Finding that was difficult as well. Twice I sent my data and credit card no. with no findings. Then when I was in DC I went to the National Archives myself and shortly found a file number which allowed me to access Josiah CHAVIS' file of more than 100 pages.[In retrospect I am glad that the workers didn't find this file, because I probably wouldn't know just how much information it had.]
He died on 5 April 1890 in East Tennessee.... lived in that area of Hawkins County which is 3 miles from Hamblen and 3 miles from Greene Co.I can't find a grave.I would like to know in which county he died.
