Very interesting.I may be mistaken, but that first article may also be found in the ORs.
According to Southern Claims Commission testimony, a preacher in eastern Marion County (AL) named Green Haley headed an underground pro-Union organization that he called the Union League.I am unsure whether Haley was operating independently and used the name of that national organization or whether he was actually tied in with the Union League and somehow coordinating his efforts with them. I have never run across any information showing that Haley's organization or the Union League had hand signals and signs/counter-signs between themselves.
Does anyone know the name of the organization mentioned in Dave's post and/or whether it was a part of the Union League? Can anyone tie Green Haley or the Union movement in NW Alabama to the Union League that was operating throughout the U.S.?Can anyone shed any more light on the Union League?(Would it have been in the nature of this organization to work with someone like Haley?)
