From the Springfield (MA) Daily News Jan. 27, 1931, "A military funeral, one of the largest ever held in West Springfield was given to John J. Mahoney, prominent real estate and insurance dealer, this morning. Representatives from nearly every walk of life, including town officials, military groups and other organizations were present to pay tribute to the Spanish war veteran. Honorary bearers representing Henry W. Lawton Camp, US Spanish War veterans were Gen. William C. Hayes, J.J. Shea, T.J. Champagne, William Derdon, camp 411, R. S. Brown, Fred J. Marotte, and Josph Demers, representing VFW post 697; John J. Kennedy, Co. I, 2d Mass. regiment. An honorary escort of 50 veterans marched from the home to the church. The firing squad consisted of members of Co G, 2d Mass infantry under the command of Jeremiah F. Scully as follows: James A Gibbon, Patrick J. O'Connell, Robert D. Cargill, George W. Campbell, William E. Coolridge, Charles R. Fisher, Patrick J. Hayes, Dennis F. McCarthy. John Mahoney was the son of John & Abby (Riley) Mahoney, b. 1862 in West Springfield, MA. He never married.
