I believe you can find indexing software if you will Google for it.Much of it may be too complicated for home users, but I have used versions designed for commercial purposes in the past. Also, if your program has an Insert feature, check that to see if it has an Index feature and then read Help to see how to use it.
That said, you have ruffled my feathers this morning. Why do you find it necessary to mention that this gentleman you are trying to help is 71 years old?How old are you that you aparently think 71 year-olds are incompetent?
I am 70 years old.I've been working on genealogy since I was 13 years old.I don't use a genealogy program. I got my first home computer in 1987.It was another three years or so before there were any genealogy programs that didn't crash and burn without a moment's notice.I put my genealogy into my computer in WordPerfect 4.0, and later WordPerfect 5.0, and that's where it stayed until about four years ago. At that time, I converted it to Word, and today it remains in Word 2000.
By the time reliable genealogy programs were available, I had over 10,000 pages.Today, I have over 20,000 pages, and I don't intend to change it. I can spend the rest of my life putting all of this into a genealogy program, or I can spend it furthering my research.I opted for the latter.
The only thing I can't do that a genealogy program does is to make a Pedigree Chart. For that, I use the free PAF provided by the LDS Library.I do that on a limited basis. And, I can do things that a genealogy program doesn't do: putting my work into chapters and writing lead-ins to the chapters are among those things.Using the Insert function, I can put legible scans of documents and photos into the chapter in which they belong. In short, I can make a camera-ready or printable book at any time. Yes, I have an index.
I am not incompetent at age 70 and I don't expect to be incompetent a year from now.Nor am I stupid for using Word 2000 instead of a genealogy program.I like what I have done with my work.
Lastly, this is probably the wrong forum for your question and my response!
