Very well said. I did it the 'old fashioned way' because that was what was available from 1983-1998.
With the software today one is encouraged to link into undocumented lines. This is a big money maker. It reminds me of 'buy your college diploma.'
There are wonderful resources available on the WWW. I almost 'grew roots' at the National Archives. Most censuses were NOT indexed and it cost 50 cents a page for a hard copy. The microfilm printing machines only accepted prepaid cards. The employees would not leave their platform behind a counter. There were no instructions. If you were lucky some kind soul would help you. I used to take at least 6 copies to get what I needed. Of course after I figured it out I needed to help others. Then they purchased new machines and 'here we go again.'
It was fun and frustrating and hard work. I loved it.
