I don't believe we should moan and lament about ancestry.com and FTM. Ancestry.com has the largest and best collection of real data available for the average person. FTM is a powerful and widely-used genealogy program. Both can be abused and misused but fraud and poor documentation occurred before computers and the internet.
Use the best features of what new technology has to offer. Many trees published on the internet do not have sources attached for the very good reason that the publisher wants to contact those who have an interest in the families there. If all is posted on the internet, they may never hear from other researchers who will take the data but don't share what they have. I have sources, notes and other documentation to SHARE with others but it's not posted on my family tree. I think that genealogy research is a lot easier and better than it was in "the good old days." We have the same problems as before about documentation and sources.
