There is correct, reasonable and wrong and outrageous.
The way to know is to use 'primary source documents.' These are documents with information given at the time of the event. Sorry, but it is even more complicated. Censuses & death records have mistakes. Even birth and marriage records have mistakes. Undocumented family trees have little value. See how confusing this a getting already?

Many people just pick up on the web. People like Betty and I and hundreds of other researchers are dismissed. Do you want it right or do you want thousands on your Gedcom?
The best advice is to find a local genealogy group; take a class; read a book.
The web has jetisoned beginners in to massive amounts of data. Of course you are confused.
