A Back button (similar to those on Web browsers) was added a couple of versions ago to help find your way back if you get lost. Navigating, however, has never been an issue that I have heard much mention of.

In a new file, the default number of generations is 4. Once that is changed, it remains changed. Keep in mind that the formatting options for each tree are separate. This means that you can have an Ancestor tree set up a certain way and the Hourglass another, each one set to a different number of generations. They never revert back to 4. If you change them to 6, it'll stay 6 until you decide to make it something else.
