I really don't want to perpetuate this, but I do need to make one correction to this sentence:
"I am wrong about the generation setting as this must have been a change with the last version as this did not work before."
Every versions of Family Tree Maker for Windows have done what I described in my initial reply the exact same way. Four generations is the default for new files, but any change to the number of generations sticks with that particular tree type until it is changed by the customer.
