Maggie, first of all, I don't "grab just anything".Second of all, apparently I work differently than you.I don't personally have any documentation at this point.I prefer to get the names first, select those from a specific area, then go and get what documentation I can (and actually, most of my names, those that I researched, and the ones I am getting from others HAVE notes as to where the info came from, be it a census record, church record, whatever).i don't know about you, but I neither have the funds nor the time to make several trips to northern alberta.I don't even have the time or the funds to make a trip to chisolm minnesota, and it's only 4 hours away.So I prefer to get what I need all together, then go get it.Thirdly, before I add a gedcom to my master file, I contact the originator to ask questions about the "link" I found.I want to make sure they are the person that is already in my db.Of the two people who didn't "know much", they put me in contact with the "researcher" of their family. In my case, I almost always send people to my brother who did most of the research on our immediate family.some of these people have better and more information than I do.however, with families like the Belleroses and Gairdners of Alberta, who often married into the same families (L'Hirondelle, Beaulieu, Calliou, Laderoux, boucher, etc.) - there are a lot of dupes. If I find "my" Jean Baptiste Beaulieu, for instance, that's great, but usually the file will have a few other people that I already have.I don't want to lose any info, I want to add info.Fourthly, it is my hope that the people in these lines will be cooperative in putting together a master file, and provide as many copies of documents and pictures as we can get, so we can have a "true" family history center. Thus far it has worked, and we actually have added 1st cousins we knew nothing about to our circle of family/friends...which everyone seems to be enjoying.
I would never just "add" names to my file. With an ancestor like Boucher in there, I would've easily blown up my computer, I have found literally thousands. And, someone has to get the documentation on all these people. It's much easier if I have the info to begin with, rather than blindly purchase a CD or book which may or may not have what I need.Or worse yet, trek to Norway only to find out that the farm I thought I had, was the wrong farm entirely.
Thanks for the advice. But I think after 20 years of doing this, I have found that my way of doing it is much more organized and less hectic, costly, time consuming, and frustrating.
