I too am struggling with this multiple same given name problem. It has always been there to a certain extent but I just recently stumbled into a honey pot of information on my wife's ancestors where both the Hanson's and Gledhill's got STUCK on the use of John and Thomas for given names and I now have umpteen duplicates. Dates certainly help to differentiate and I too have adopted a policy of estimating birth dates, but I still rely on the use of I, II, III, etc., for my own benefit. (An aside on estimating births - I did this religiously until I recently became TOTALLY confused trying to bounce back and forth between some known event dates and my initial birth estimates and finally gave up and just cleared all of the birth estimates in that line).
I ONLY use FTM for the ability to QUICKLY and cleanly produce ancestor charts and indented descendants listings with ALOT of information included - I can't even begin to figure out how to do this in UFT. So I periodically save my file to gedcom and then re-import it into FTW to have a fresh copy solely for this purpose.
