I thinkyou're missing an important part from the announcement. The first sentence from that announcement says, in part "...that it is no longer feasible for us to continue development..."
There are many factors that had to be looked at when the decision was made. Among them would be sales, both current and projected; the size of a market, both current and projected; development resources; and the future direction of genealogy and computers. It is when all of these factors, and undoubtedly others, were looked at the decision was made.
