The situation at Genealogy.com seems to have been much as I feared. It must have been tough to manage work-in-progress, marketing, and support when so many players got involved, and the organization seemed to be forever changing. That is NOT the way to produce/sell a fairly complex software product like UFT.
I never could see the logic of such low prices for the program, where they were almost guaranteed to loose money the more they sold. And time proved that approach was not viable. I probably spent as much for Roots III as I have on all its successors combined, and I thought I had reasonable value then. My guess is that TMG has a more realistic pricing and marketing approach for long-term viability - at least I hope so.
It is also a warning that we should pay for a product what we feel its value is, and not look for too many cheap ways of getting it. I expect I will buy TMG 5 from a local Canadian dealer - for a bit more than Wholly Gene's UFT offer, but I won't have to worry about transboarder shipping (usually it is problem free, but somethime there is a hitch). I don't want to make too many changes in my genealogy work if I can avoid it, and I've got UFT working close to what I want. I also hope the migration to TMG 5.0 will be a bit easier than to 4.0a.
