The problem was not the 3.1 patch. The problem was that so many users had reinstalled UFT 2.x in a different directory after the 3.0 installation. (Due to the "citation bug" created in 3.0). This left the pointers in the registry aimed towards the latest 2.x installation.

If you read the FTM forums, you will soon realize that the answer to about half of the questions FTM users ask is the following, "You can't do that with FTM. However if you had UFT . . ." -John
