My great-grandmother's sister, Sarah Princer, married a John Gabriel Semith in 1919. On the 1930 census, she is divorced living under her maiden as a boarder in Chicago, and he is an inmate at Fort Leavenworth. On her death certificate, her nephew is the informant, and she is described as " never married". Obviously the marriage was a brief one. My question is does "inmate" only mean prisoner or is it possible he was stationed there? Is it only military crimes that would send you there? He died in California in the '60's.
