Just what does this term actually mean? It appears on the CMSR card, US-Mexican War, with a $_____ (amount) with no further explanation. On one card that I am looking at, it has in the "remarks" section: "Stop. for one screw driver lost." On another card it has, in the remarks section, "Stop." and then lists various equipment. Am I correct in thinking that this term refers to equipment furnished to the soldier for which he had to re-imburse the government? Did these volunteers have to pay for their uniforms, cartridge cases, sabers, belts, etc.? And then pay for them via a payroll deduction? I have seen deductions on Civil War (Confederate) CMSRs where the soldier is discharged and has amounts deducted from pay due for clothing or a blanket, etc., so is this the same thing?
