Merchant Marine is not just tied to the military where they "served", it also refers to persons who work for commerical shipping companies and are hired either directly to "serve" aboard ship as a crewman or they could be a member of a Mariner's Union. Some, but not all register through the U.S. Coast Guard to be able to hold certain positions. Google "Merchant Marine" and you will find more information about where to look for more information.
By the way Wilmer Hale Wahl was born July 1, 1914 in FL. Rudolph Wahl, age 46 in the 1930 census listed occupation as "mate" on a "steamship" while he and his family lived in Key West, Monroe Co. FL. He was born in FL, his father was born in Germany, his mother in Florida and Wilmer is 15 yrs old with siblings Dorothy age 17 and Erle/Earl age 8, wife Idell is 39.
