I've got a land grant document stating a possible direct ancestor of mine was in the military. He was granted land in Missouri. Here's what it says:
James Monroe President of the United States of America
TO ALL WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME, GREETINGS.
Show ye, That in pursuance of the Acts of Congress appropriating and granting Land to the late Army of the United States, passed on and since the sixth day of May, 1812 [my ancestor XYX] having deposited in the General Land-Office a Warrant in [his] favor, numbered [xxxxx] there is granted unto [the said XYX] late a [Private in Riddle's Company 8th reg of in Infantry] a certain Tract of Land, containing [one hundred & sixty acres]
...and so on.
