Don't get too stuck on one location. I have a 5th great that was in the Rev. War, and in those days new territory was opening up and people were moving. I Know parts of VA had dead soil from overplanting, so it was necessary for people to move to be able to provide food for themselves. Plus, I think they might have thought the grass was greener on the other side!TN was a popular state back then. Missouri was a hit with explorers, fur trappers. Texas opened up for many in 1840 or so. Did you check to see if NARA has anything? One grandfather fought in 1812, Missouri and Louisiana. So go to the State Archives where you think he might have last lived (and received land, etc) My records came from Columbia U in Missouri. Good luck!
