I have been researching a possible ancestor - Aaron Hinman - for some time.I have written to NARA and received his bounty land application file, warrant, and land entry file. His heirs - Timothy and Warren Hinman - received 160 acres for his service. The application process was started in 1837; warrant was issued in 11/1842; and a land patent finally issued in 1845.The land award totaled 160 acres and was the entire NE 1/4 of Section 35, T42N, R9E, 3rd P.M. (which is in present-day Barrington Twp., Cook Co., Illinois). However, I don't think he claimed his patent. When I search the GLO database, the NE 1/4 of that section is the only part that does not have a patent for it. Only two names are listed as patentees in that section.Interestingly, the lawyer who helped Aaron Hinman's heirs get the warrant - Archibald C. Crary - bought a large part of Section 35 at that time.Josiah Carr is the other patentee.
I'm trying to prove that my ancestor - Timothy Hinman - is the one mentioned in the bounty land warrant.I still believe this is so.My strategy is to trace the land transactions and hopefully end up where my ancestor Timothy settled. We've always known forever that Timothy and his family left the state of NY in about 1845 or 1846 and thereafter settled in SW Wisconsin around Platteville. Is there a way to find out if he sold the land granted to him and purchased lands in SW Wisconsin instead?Or if he "traded" in his original grant for lands in SW Wisconsin?I thought I would put this one to rest after I got the land entry file for this warrant, but instead I have many more questions!Isn't genealogy fun?!
I tried emailing NARA with my questions but could not figure out how.The "contact us" button is nothing more than a loop.I'm sure this is by design.I tried calling but gave up after sitting on hold for about 20 minutes.
Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
