7th Cav.
My great-grandfather, William Jefferson Davis Jr. of Orange Co., VA served in Troop K of the 7th Cavalry at Wounded Knee. His troop was in the front lines and he was shot in the leg; it was amputated later at Ft. Robinson, NE.He survived until 1945 is is buried in Orange Co., VAOne of his daughters that I spoke to a few years ago indicated that he was shot "by an Indian woman."She gave me his original discharge paper which I have had preserved.I received his pension papers from the VA about 10 years ago.
A good book on the action was sent to me from the Ft. Robinson Museum. It's called "The Wounded Knee Interviews of Eli S. Ricker."I urge all serious students of the subject to try to get a copy.
