The county list of WWI deaths I mentioned was printed in 1930 and listed McKinley under the town of Byron, so the Charles you mentioned may be a significant clue--perhaps for some reason Charles was misidentified in the article as "McKinley." I'll track this further to see if Charles's abscess was war-related. Also, I've found several cases on honor roll lists of young veterans who died shortly after the war and were included on such lists even though they hadn't died of directly war-related causes.
