I'm interested in searching for my great grand uncle again. My family and I know nothing more than we did before.
Previously, we knew our uncle to be called Dennis. In the 1900 census, however, he is listed as Francis. He was born in May 1894.
My great grandmother, Sophie Cahill always said that he was wounded, or hit with mustard gas. We know he served because he is wearing his uniform in an old photo of him.
I have obtained all of the Dennis and Francis's who served, from the State Archives, in Albany. There are some close matches, but none that are 100% our man.
The only one who was wounded was born in Ireland. Our uncle was born in New York, New York. The one from Ireland was wounded, but his age is too old. (he was in the fighting 69th NY)
Its possibly that our uncle may have died in the 1930's. Still, its hard to say. This ancestor is a complete mystery to us... and the stories that Sophie told us do not match up with the papers recieved from the NY State Archives.
Hopes this helps
