Greetings, John Wayslow!

The record I am looking at does not include 648th TD BN as a part 9th A/D. They departed NY P/E at or about the same
date/s (648th, 20Aug44, 9th A/D,18 Aug 44.)
The photo may simply show him in a visiting mode.
This was a separate BN, meaning that it was never a permanent part of either an Infantry Division, or of an Armored Division.
Such battalions were assigned to varous senior units on an as-needed/where needed basis.
648th TD BN was attached to 70th Infantry Division,
20 Feb 45 thru 3 Mar 45.
In turn, the 70th ID was assigned as follows:
XV Corps, 20 Feb 45/31 Mar 45
XXII Corps, 25 Feb 45/21 Mar 45
7th Army, 22 Mar 44
12 Army Group, 31 Mar 45.
The 648th TD BN was assigned to 86th Infantry Division,
15 Mar 45 / 18 Apr 45.
The 86th was assigned as follows:
XVIII Corps, 5 Apr 45
So with this, you may expand your search a lot.
If you have access to Stanton's WW II Order of Battle, you will find the combat narratives for the two divisions mentioned above.
Get back to me if needed.OK ?
