Alan - Thank you. I guess that is the difference between United Kingdom and the United States. I have literally hundreds of pages from the US National Archives. Think of the effort to stamp, date and initial all those pages. The dates seem to be about 50 yrs. apart. I know nothing about UK rules and regulations but have somewhere read that some ( I am vague about this) records must be kept "secret" for 50 yrs in the US. That could explain the dating and initials.
Another possibility is that you are transcribing "diaries". I have been working from documents written by US troops describing actual official action in battle and the awards, etc given these men. Again maybe the difference between two countries.
