My fathers best friend and child hood buddie was in WWWI. His name was Modest F. Roll, though his nickname was "Smoke or Smoky". He received a full disability after the war. My father always said that Smoke made it all the way through the war alive, to be shot as he got off the boat at home. A soldier at the dock, went crazy and started shooting at everyone. Smoke was shot in the back. He survived, but we always felt sad when we heard the story. Smoke was from Morrice, MI. The only thing I know about his service in WWII was an address my father had to write him during that time. The address was: T/5 Modest F. Roll 36415046 Co. C 692 T.D. Bn. A.P.O. 230 of P.M.
Does this make sense to anyone? I do know he was in Germany. Smoke died last year. Thanks, Carolyn
