Tom, thank you so much for the info! I see there's a lot to understand but you've put me on the right track!
I have another quesion, if you don't mind. I'm not sure what exactly is available in the way of soldier's records.I know I need to try to get medical records from the VA.Do they have other records or strictly medical?Do I send for both regular and medical records thru the VA or do I send for regular records to the NPRC in Missouri. Are there any records available (other than medical) that I don't already have?I have Dad's discharge paper, a certificate awarding him the Bronze Star Medal, a certified notice of the Purple Heart Award and a signed thank you letter from Harry Truman.
I'm looking at this notice about the Purple Heart......can you explain what this means? The heading says: RESTRICTED HEADQUARTERS 217TH (U.S.) GENERAL HOSPITAL SEINE SECTION, COM 2, ETO APO 887, U.S. ARMY
It's dated 15 March 1945.There may have been something above that heading... it looks like the paper has been cut.Since this is dated 9 days before he was sent back to the States......I'm assuming he was given the Purple Heart while he was in a hospital in Germany??
