In going thru all my grandmothers old pictures I came across a picture of a young man by the name of Willis L. Butler. attached to the photo is an newspaper clipping that reads
"MODESTAN DIES IN CRASH OF BOMBER" Word of the death of their son Staff Sergeant Willis L. Butler on April 20th in the Admiralty Islands today had been received by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Butler of 310 Pine Street. According to a letter eceived from sergeant Butler's commanding officer, the Modesto youth was killed instantly in a takeoff crash of a b24 Bomber. He was a waiste gunner and armorer engineer and had been in active combat in the South Pacific since April 1943. Prior to his enlistment, Butler was employed by an auto parts firm here. He was a member of the Modesto Motorcycle Club. In the letter to his parents, the commanding officer said Butler had "an eviable record of service" He held the Air Medal and Four Oak Leaf Clusters.
It appears that maybe there is more to it than thatbut that is all I have.
I do not reconzize this name in any of my genealogy research that I have done and I am trying to find out who he is in conncetion with my family (possibly a cousin or close family friend)? In any case I would like to find out more about him and his family.
If you think you know something about him or know of a way I can research Military sites I would appreciate your help. I don't know to much about the military and I am not sure what branch of it he was in? The picture looks as though he could either be in the Marines or the Army. Maybe one of the experts out there could help me with this one?
