Can anyone help throw light on which British division my late father served with during WW2.......? He served throughout the period 1939-1945, he spoke of being in Alexandria at some point and also the Western Desert, often mentioning El Alamein. Disconcertingly, he also spoke of his regiment/division being readied to take part in the aborted 'Operation Rutter' assault on Dieppe. Later, he landed with the British 1st Army in Algiers in November of 1942 with 'Operation Torch'. Later still landing in Sicily with 'Operation Husky', from there, on to Taranto and Bari in Italy, being in Bari on the evening in December 1943 when the Luftwaffe bombed the harbour. Eventually, he found himself at Monte Cassino, later he was lifted from Naples, ending the war with the occupation forces in Belgium being billeted in the town of Ninove with a family named Braeckmans. I have no recollection of him ever mentioning his regiment or division and I wondered if anyone reading the above might be able to throw some light and assist......? Almost forgot, my late father was either a Sergeant or a Corporal with the Army Catering Corps so would have been 'attached' to whichever force it was whose movements I record here. I realise he may have been 'attached' to several throughout his service which complicates matters.!! Despite several attempts to amend my e:mail address as here it has failed to work, so, if anyone can assist please respond to this site and ignore the e:mail address. Thanks in anticipation to any who can assist.
