Barbara - I wish I were better informed. I suppose there were men who carried books or a book but I suspect with all they had to contend with they were few. As for letters- papers - etc that would have had to be a personal decision, I'd think.The Adjutant said that if the uncle was an enlisted man - that means that he could have held any rank from Private through any kind of Sergeant his clothing then belonged to the Army. He had not paid for those articles do they probably were not supposed to be returned.
I do not understand why his platoon did not know him unless he had been newly assignedfrom a different platoon in the unit he was with. And , yes, I would write to the person you have mentioned. I would also see if you could find a phone #. There are Web sites for phone #s. I usually use Switchboard. If there are a fewnames the same try them all. Sorry I wish I knew a lot more. Mary
