His training unit as indicated on the letters does not necessarily correspond to the combat unit when he was KIA. Many WWII soldiers trained in the states with a certian unit, and were then shipped overseas to a Replacement Depot where they were assigned to combat units as replacements as needed.
The 79th Division did not fight in the Battle of the Bulge.He may have died at the same time, however.The 79th was fighting in the central France/German border near Strassbourg in Dec 1944.
