The 747th Tank BN was activated 10 Nov 42, at Camp Bowie, TX, as Tank BN-Medium.
Following training, departed NY P/E, 11 Feb 44;
(Possibly sailed on DUTCHESS of BEDFORD, arriving 2-11-44 at Firth of Clyde, Scotland. A L. WEISS is listed as on board)
arrived England, 23 Feb 44;
arrived France-ETO, 7 Jun 44.
Central Europe, 22 Mar 45 / 11 May 45
Normandy6 Jun / 24 Jul 44
Northern France,25 Jul 44 / 14 Sept 44
Rhineland,15 Sept 44 / 11 May 45.
This unit was non-divisional.
It was attached to 29th Infantry Division on three assignments:
17 May 44 / 17 Aug 44
28 Sept 44 / 6 Mar 45
20 Mar 45 / 23 Jul 45.
There would have been other attachments/assignments.
The 29th Infantry Division departed NY P/E, 5 Oct 42;
arrived England, 11 Oct 42;
assaulted Normandy, France, 6 Jun 44.
Same as those listed for 747th Tank BN.
Arrived back at NY P/E, 16 Jan 46;
(Probably on the M.S.JOHN ERICCSON, by way of Bremerhaven, Germany. B.APPLETON may have been on board.)
inactivated at Camp Kilmer, NJ, 17 Jan 46.
(Personal note: On the day the 29th ID was inactivated,
17 Jan 46, I celebrated my 21st birthday with a COLD swim in
Mussolini's private pool in Rome.)
I plan to check the actual engagements the 747th was
involved in at a later time. OK ?
Sometimes (most of the time) information at the battalion level is scant, so I will have to track the 29th ID in order to develop a combat profile for the 747th.
