REPORT EXTRACT - INVASION
The following is an extract from the historical report of the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 191st Field Artillery Group covering a period from embarking at Hollandia, Dutch New Guinea to debarkation at Lingayen Gulf, Philippines Islands.
“Ship, USS James Rolph pulled out in convoy at 0531I, 5 Jan., 1945. At 1430I, 12 January 1945, the convoy was attacked by two enemy fighter planes; one was shot down by a destroyer and the other crash dived into the liberty ship astern of us, setting it afire.
At 1845I, the same day, the convoy was attacked by seven enemy planes, all of which were wither shot down or destroyed by suicide dives.The only ship damaged by this attack was the liberty ship on our starboard beam, which was hit by an enemy plane and set afire.
At 1030I, 13 January 1945, ship dropped anchor in Lingayen Gulf, Luzon. Philippine Islands.”
