My late father, Sgt. Carl J. Zeigler, was in the 165th Regiment on Makin. He served with the portable field hospital and ran the motor pool. He died in 1973. He did not talk about the war but I believe he received the Bronze Star for driving an ambulance into a burning ammunition dump to rescue soldiers who were wounded when a Japanese plane bombed it and set it afire. He left the 27th after Makin and participated in the Leyte and Okinawa invasions. I believe he was in the 7th Division then.
