In accordance with an article in the New York Times dated 8/31/1945:
5 TRANSPORTS DUE WITH 17,000 TODAY ...Also arriving were the Aleda E. Lutz, an Army hospital ship, the former French liner Colombie with 735 Army and Navy patients, including Pvt. Michael F. McInerney, 38 years old, of 374 Sixth Avenue, Brooklyn, believed to be the last American battle casualty brought home from the European theatre. He was in the Forty-sixth Armored Infantry of the Fifth Armored Division, and was wounded near the Elbe River. "I hope I'm the last casualty in any war forever," he said.
Pvt. Michael F. McInerney is my grandfather but I have been unable to obtain his military records as they have been "burned" in a fire.Does anyone know how do I verfy the above information or is it a dead end?
