Bobbie - The Servicemans Allowance Act of 1942 made provision for enlisted men to ask for an allowance for Class A - a wife, child,a divorced wife who is still due alimony. The application was headed War Department and was filled out at Ft. Sheridan, Il. Not the town where he enlisted but where he had to go for processing.
Class B included a number of other relatives who were dependent on the soldier for a substantial amount of their sustanence. (I do not know the amounts for each kind of dependency)
My husband applied for that allowance for me 2 days after he enlisted. For the months he was an enlisted man I received $50 each month by check. When he became an officer the allowance was discontinued.
Proof was required and the rank was certified.
I don't know where one would get a copy. Don sent the papers to me when he had completed the process and I saved them. Mary
