If he was a member of the Engineers and in their medical detachment and attached to the Rangers, you likely WON'T find reference to him in the Rangers----two seperate outfits and two seperate paperwork trails.Key on the Engineer unit.By the Way, the proper terms for the unit was ENGINEER SPECIAL BRIGADES (ESB)and Engineer Shore Regiment (ESR).Pick up a book called UTAH BEACH-St Mere Eglise by Carl Shilleto (bought mine at Barnes&Noble) In the end pages it lists all the memorial intersections in Normandy named to ESR personnel--many from the 531. James is not mentioned.
As far as finding James himself, I found reference to 8 Lemuel James in SSDI.Most were born in the 1800s or very early 1900s.There was a Lemuel W. from CT (1921).But the more likely is this one:
LEMUEL JAMES B:16 May 1915 D:Oct 1981 zip:31204 (Macon, Bibb County, GA) Georgia
Cross reference to another database provide a likely middle name:
JAMES, LEMUEL P age 88GA
(This is most likely from a phone directory--it was ref'd to 1995, but I do believe it was dated telephone information)
