Louis Welbes of Frank Street, SE Huron, SD was a member of "H&S" Company of the 86th Engineers."H&S"company landed on Omaha beach July 5th, just under one month after DDAY.The 86th was a heavy ponton bridge battalion.
The 86th constructed bridges over the Seine (at Poissy), the Meuse (at Mahon and Sedan), r the Rhine (at Remagen ) and the Inn river.The 86th also had a stormboat section that ferried men and supplies before bridges were complete.
H&S Company had several sections including Bn Supply, Water Supply, Company Headquarters, storm boat, and Motor Supply.
The unit history of the 86th states that one unnamed, enterprising member of H&S used his motorcycle to transport himself and 2 other soldiers away from the advancing German army.Not all members of the 86th were fortunate enough to get away - one member has captured and later killed at the Malmedy Massecre.
During WWII, 2 members of the 86th were killed and 34 members were listed as injured or wounded.The 86th received 5 campaign stars for service during WWII
