If his remains had remained in Europe, at least you would have a death date, location and unit reference perhaps.
He would have been entitled to a Purple Heart at a minimum. Perhaps you might consider applying for this and any others he may have been due, which may give you a lead or so.

Sign as next-of-kin, and give your best guess as to his date/s of service.
You might also request a Replacement of Military Records form, which is Form-180, I think.
You may not be successful with this one, as most of the records were lost to a massive fire at the records storage facility at St. Louis back around 1973, I am told.
