My grandfather was Joseph B. Bourgeois, Jr, of New Orleans, Louisiana. Everyone called him "Frenchie", and I'm told he was a cook.
He served on the USS New Orleans from right before Pearl Harbor until the end of the WWII. He was with the ship at Pearl Harbor and helped fend off the Japanese attack.
I contacted the USS New Orleans Reunion Association, and they do have ships' records with his names.
What happened is that a few years ago, the flag was to be presented to my grandfather, but he had moved and they couldn't find him. They put ads in the paper, and one of my other relatives responded. This relative (with the permission of my grandfather once he had been informed) went and was given the flag on my grandfather's behalf, and then donated it to the D-Day Museum.
If you need more info, please e-mail me privately. I really appreciate it.
